Illegal immigration now a top issue for Lithuanians

The number of Lithuanians concerned about the issue has risen five times since the same time last year. Only 4% of people saw it as a key issue last year.

Violent crime, corruption and road safety were still identified as highly important public safety issues with 39% of respondents identifying violent crime as a key issue and 37% identifying corruption and traffic safety. 28% said drug related crime was the key public safety issue.

“We have a problem [migration] that everyone can see clearly, it is far away, but it is clearly on the radar,” said Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis, presenting the results of the large-scale survey carried out last autumn.

The survey of public opinion, commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior, was carried out by research company Spinter from August to October last year with 3,011 people surveyed across Lithuania.
