Officers of the Environment Ministry’s Alytus Region Environmental Protection Department have collected water samples from the Nemunas river by the border with Belarus after an incident was reported Grodno Azot nitrogen factory in Belarus.

For some time after the explosion at the plant, the town of Grodno was surrounded by a great cloud of smoke, but neither factory workers nor town residents were evacuated, according to a press release.

When inspectors visited the location near the Nemunas river, they reported that there were no strong or unpleasant odours that would suggest air pollution.

Water samples from the river were taken on Monday and Wednesday, but primary water physical parameters were unchanged.

Further tests will show whether there is any increase in ammonia and nitrogen compounds concentration in the Nemunas river water.
