“The people of Poland have spoken very clearly indeed. We see a very clear outcome, we undoubtedly respect it and will work constructively with all the governments that have the support of the people,” Grybauskaitė told reporters on Monday in Vilnius.

The head of state hopes that cooperation with Poland will continue to be constructive, especially as far as economy, various projects and, in particular, security are concerned.

Although political scientists claim that the government changeover may increase tensions over the issue of ethnic minorities in Lithuania, Grybauskaitė says she does not want to speculate on the matter.

Poland’s opposition conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party in Sunday’s elections defeated the ruling Civic Platform (PO) with 39.1 percent against 23.4 percent of the vote. Former rock star Pawel Kukiz’s party was third with 9 percent. AFP and Radio Poland reported that voter-turnout was 51.6 percent.
