A solemn ceremony will take place in the Cathedral Square, including a line-up of the Lithuanian Army’s Guard of Honour, a choir performance, cannon fire and a flag performance.

An international conference dedicated to the anniversary is also kicking off in Vilnius on Friday.

The parliament has announced the year 2014 as the year of the Battle of Orsha, with a series of events, a jubilee coin, a post stamp and exhibitions planned.

The Battle of Orsha took place on 8 September 1514 between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Moscow, making history as one of the first examples of the classic artillery ambush. Despite considerably smaller number of military resources, the battle was won by the army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
