“I hope that with you in the office of president, we will continue actively promoting bilateral relations between Lithuania and Bulgaria, while the dialogue enhanced by common values and interests in the context of EU and NATO will predetermine success in addressing the key issues of continental agenda,” Grybauskaitė said in a congratulatory message circulated by her press service.

The Lithuanian president also wished the new Bulgarian leader success in performing the high-level duties, as he brings together the people of Bulgaria to perform the meaningful work in the interest of Bulgarian citizens.

“I sincerely wish for the trust, expressed by the people of Bulgaria, to be a source of inspiration to you in realizing the goals of national importance while strengthening the unity, well-being and security of all Bulgarian people,” she said.

Bulgaria, a member of the EU and NATO, picked as president a new figure on the political arena. The president-elect is a former commander of Air Force who speaks in support of a milder position towards Russia and review of the status of Crimea annexed in 2014.
