The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, insists that the borders be remain open and that the EU offer unlimited asylum for refugees. Ms. Merkel said that “everyone that comes to Europe has to be treated as a human being. Fundamental rights charter was not created so that we could treat foreigners inhumanly .” She added that the burden of providing asylum has to be shared according to each country’s capacities.

Mr. Landsbergis commented saying that opposition to Merkel‘s proposals was populist and that the decisions had already been made.
