Putin says Russia to add 40 missiles to its nuclear arsenal

Vladimir Putin, Sergey Shoygu

Putin said on Tuesday that the weapons would be able to overcome even the most technically advanced anti-missile defence systems.

The statement comes after the United States hinted at plans to deploy heavy weaponry in NATO states in Eastern Europe, including Lithuania.

Tensions between Moscow and the West have been high after Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

Moreover, NATO and Western leaders say Russia is sending soldiers and heavy weapons to pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied this, insisting that any Russians fighting there are “volunteers”.
